Under His wings you will find refuge. — Psalm 91:4

The shelter of His Wings

The Psalms are some of my favorite places to go. There we find true, raw, honest prayers. The kind that I am sure accompany those messy tears. I find such peace in the oasis of the Psalms to know that He hears each one of my prayers and that sometimes it is okay to pray unrestrained like that. He made our hearts so we can pour them out to Him.

You can find refuge in God’s presence because the Bible says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…” (James 4:8). Repentance is about softening your heart into believing and acting on that wonderful truth. Making God your refuge is all about hiding yourself inside His presence here and all around you. King David wrote, “But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord God my refuge…” (Psa. 73:28). We need to depend on the “nearness of God” because when we find refuge and security by earthly means, it is always close to us a child’s blanket, our personality, our doctrines, the money in our pocket, hard shells of self-protection.

God designed you to need something close to you in order to find refuge. God knows what you need! It is His desire to draw near to you and be your God–more fully than what you may have ever known was possible.

When you get hurt for whatever reason soothing yourself with God’s presence is far more effective than anything else you could depend on.

Reading this Psalm 91 reminds me many years ago of how my family and many other families in our neighborhood in Haiti were looking for a safe place of protection, a shelter to hide from past hurricane. There is a sense of peace and relief knowing that you and your family have a safe place to hide and you will be okay after the storm has passed. Are you safe in Him? Who and where is your refuge? Is He your hiding place? Let me remind you today that we are safer in Him. How beautiful it is that under His wings we find refuge! He is My Rock, my Redeemer and my Song, The Faithful One!

The wings of God not only provided David with these comforts, but they also provided a place for David to praise Him “Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.” We can sing our songs of praise to Him as well, knowing that the warmth and security of His wings covers us even on our most lonely or pain-filled days. They will carry us with the strength we need until He flies us home.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that Your wings are always there to carry me, care for me, and catch me when I fall (Deuteronomy 32:10, 11). Amen.
I am praying for the Lord’s abundant blessing on your efforts to direct your heart toward Him.
While I am grateful for the safety of my family in Haiti but my heart aches for those who’ve already lost their lives, death toll and cholera cases are rising up and the aftermath of Hurricane Matthews. We need your financial support! Will you Join me in Prayer for Haiti today?
