Stop and smell the roses and be thankful for the little things

As I was reading this morning, I came across this verse:

Proverbs 15:21, “Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment, but a man of understanding walks uprightly.”

So many times in life we are running like crazy to get to the proverbial finish line. And guess what happens when we get there? We often find out that we need to do this and that and run further and go here, and run there….and, well, that was just the first pit stop in something that now looks like an onion as we begin to peel back the many layers.

We don’t stop to discern (up front, before starting out)…is this REALLY the journey we are supposed to take? Or is it just the dangling carrot? Remember….sometimes when you go after the carrot, all you get is the stick.

Maybe this is why the Bible says to seek God FIRST…before we start out. It saves us time and trouble. And yes, I’m totally guilty of doing this myself. Too busy for my own good many days. This year though, I’m trying to slow it down and make sure that I’m walking down the RIGHT path, not just spinning my wheels to arrive at a fruitless destination.

I love the first part of this verse as well. “Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment.” God can give you discernment if you ask for it. If something in your spirit is telling you that what you’re doing is wrong, even if it looks like you are hitting the jackpot…walk away. There is no joy in taking what God does not have set aside for you. The path back from this short-lived victory is never worth the ride.

Join me this year in slowing down and smelling a few roses instead of just trampling over them. And be thankful for the little things. This means stop stressing out, overthinking, or complaining. put your troubles in perspective and try to enjoy the short time you have on earth. It’s much easier to get the lawn mower out and head to the finish line, but it’s much sweeter to smell the sweet scent of blessings that God has set aside for you…for all of us.
